Way to watch the prices going up

KEVIN Rudd made much of his determination to act on rising grocery prices during the election campaign.

Yesterday his Government unveiled its grocery-choice website.

It offers price comparisons for a basket of goods, plus a basket of staple items.

A puzzling aspect of the site is that price comparison for the North East includes stores from Wodonga to Gippsland which is probably of limited value to a shopper in Wodonga.

And Aldi stores are only included in the staple items price comparison.

Naturally weekly specials play no part in the comparison, which means the tried and true method of watching specials and buying when things are cheap is the real way to save money.

The possibility of unit pricing that will help give shoppers a real price comparison is apparently still a long way off.

Kevin Rudd promised us action on grocery prices.

But if this is the best he can do nobody should expect to save much money.
