WALKER REJECTS ROVERS

WANGARATTA Rovers are nearing a decision on their vacant coaching position but it will not be filled by Wodonga captain Josh Walker.

The search for a replacement for John McNamara has gone into overdrive in recent weeks with at least two candidates interviewed last week.

But Walker, the Bulldogs assistant coach, confirmed he was not in the running after being approached by the Hawks towards the end of the home and away season.

Walker and Tarrawingee coach Mick Wilson both declined the opportunity to coach the Hawks, with other names being linked to the role including recently retired Brisbane Lions star Nigel Lappin and Bulldogs premiership coach Richard Bence.

“They put a proposal forward, just an informal one, to see whether I was interested and wanted to put my name forward and have some meetings with them,” Walker said yesterday.

“I said I would have a think about it, but within a week I signed back up with Wodonga.

“It was on the cards there for a week or so, but I wasn’t ready for it, so I passed up the opportunity and stayed with Wodonga for a bit.”
