Big Macs on the way to Corowa

COROWA is set to get a $5 million McDonald’s family restaurant by Christmas.

It will create 20 full-time jobs and positions for about 100 casual staff.

McDonald’s Australia Ltd real estate development manager Chris Morgan watched as shire councillors unanimously approved planning consent yesterday.

Mr Morgan said later it would mean $600,000 a year going into the local economy in wages, with $20,000 available for sponsorship.

“We’ll now complete the site purchase and start demolition in a month,’’ he said.

“We are seeking tenders for a builder and plan to have the restaurant ready before Christmas.

“The franchisee has not been appointed.’’

Mr Morgan said two people had objected but McDonald’s had been able to allay their fears.

Cr Keith Barber said one objection had criticised the type of food sold, but he thought it wasn’t justified, and nor could a council be concerned with food types or obesity issues.

The restaurant will be a traditional McDonald’s in appearance and will be able to seat 69 diners.

A playground and parking for 34 cars will be provided.

McDonald’s golden arches will be erected on a 10m pole on Sanger Street, opposite a Shell service station and Lovell’s Motel.

A drive-through entry will be on Federation Avenue, part of the Riverina Highway.

The 2681sq m site is owned by the Hunter family and is being used by a crane hire firm at present.

Mr Morgan said Corowa had been selected for a restaurant with Rutherglen’s wine-related tourism trade a factor.

The nearest McDonald’s are at Yarrawonga, Cobram, Albury-Wodonga, Wangaratta and Glenrowan.

Permission was given to operate the restaurant 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

Environmental services director Bob Parr said McDonald’s thought it unlikely that the restaurant would operate on a 24/7 basis but the business required the flexibility to meet customer demands.

Longer hours might be needed in peak holiday periods.
